Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)

Frozen shoulder is a condition marked by progressive pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint, often leading to severely limited mobility. It develops gradually and may persist for months or even years, especially if left untreated. Most commonly seen in individuals aged 40–60, frozen shoulder is associated with conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, or periods of shoulder immobility.

Causes of Frozen Shoulder:

  • 1. Post-injury or post-surgical immobility
  • 2. Chronic inflammation in the shoulder capsule
  • 3. Underlying health issues like diabetes or thyroid imbalance

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder:

  • 1. Gradual onset of pain in the shoulder
  • 2. Severe restriction in movement (especially rotation and lifting)
  • 3. Difficulty sleeping on the affected side

Treatment and Rehabilitation:

    • 1. Manual Therapy:

Hands-on mobilization techniques help reduce joint stiffness and restore the shoulder’s natural movement. It is essential during the frozen and thawing stages.

    • 2. Soft Tissue Release:

Focuses on releasing tight muscles and fascia around the shoulder, which reduces pain and improves muscle flexibility.

    • 3. Capsular Stretches:

Specific stretching techniques to elongate the tight joint capsule, allowing for improved range of motion over time

    • 4. Shoulder Strengthening Exercises:

Targets the rotator cuff and scapular muscles to rebuild strength and improve functional shoulder stability.

    • 5. Lifestyle Modification:

Involves adjusting posture, activity level, and ergonomics to support recovery and prevent recurrence.
