Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy is a condition caused by compression or irritation of nerves in the neck, leading to radiating pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms and hands. It commonly results from herniated discs, bone spurs, or age-related degeneration of the cervical spine. Left untreated, it can significantly affect posture, sleep, and upper limb function.

Causes of Cervical Radiculopathy:

  • 1. Herniated cervical discs
  • 2. Degenerative disc disease or bone spurs
  • 3. Poor posture or trauma to the neck

Symptoms of Cervical Radiculopathy:

  • 1. Neck pain radiating to arms or fingers
  • 2. Tingling or numbness in the hands
  • 3. Muscle weakness and reduced grip strength

Treatment and Rehabilitation:

    • 1. Cervical Traction:

Cervical traction gently decompresses the spine and relieves pressure on affected nerve roots.

    • 2. Pain Modulation:

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (IFT) reduces neck and arm pain by interrupting pain signals.

    • 3. Cervical Spine Mobilization:

Manual techniques restore joint movement and reduce mechanical irritation in the cervical spine.

    • 4. Posture Correction:

Essential for preventing strain on cervical structures; involves training for optimal alignment.

      • 5. Ergonomic Advice:

Recommends workstation and daily activity adjustments to reduce neck strain.

    • 6. Deep Cervical Flexor Activation:

Exercises targeting deep neck stabilizers improve head control and reduce recurrence.

    • 7. Scapular and Thoracic Extensions:

Strengthening the upper back improves posture and relieves stress on the neck.

  • 8. Nerve Tissue Mobilization:

Involves gentle gliding of the affected nerves to restore normal mobility and reduce symptoms.
